I think it's strength lies in it's differentiation from other ghost story films. It's very melancholy, very down-beat and moody. I don't think you'd see a story like this handled this way today....

I agree on IMAGES.  I think it's pretty terrific, and I do consider it a horror film.  Its sometimes-too-obvious inspiration is REPULSION.
